Gerold Plassek is anything but a do gooder. A journalist with a regional newspaper in St. Pölten and a confirmed cynic, he never does more than the minimum necessary. He spends his sizeable amounts of free time getting drunk with like minded friends at his favourite pub - until two unexpected and initially unwelcome events put an end to Gerold's lethargy and perpetual misery. First, he becomes responsible overnight for Manuel, the 14 year old son of an old friend while the friend is overseas working for Doctors without Borders. Secondly, and even more seriously, an anonymous well-wisher donates large sums of money to precisely the charitable organisation that Gerold's newspaper articles are looking into. And his acquaintanceship with Manuel's quick witted teacher Rebecca calls into question all the arrogant indifference he has cultivated over the years.

What Adelgunde, her mother and younger sister Heidrun aren't aware of, is that he founded a new family in the camp. She claims to be Adelgunde's missing father's grandchild. When both women start to dig into their family history, which is linked to a current murder case, their personal and political differences become flagrant. And a long buried family secret comes to light.

Eisner and Fellner realise there is no way around this: to stop the murderer, they have to find out who the victims were.

The longer the feverish hunt lasts, the clearer it becomes that the culprit isn't working alone. He must have accomplices that support him and his activities. The trail leads to a network of radical activists classified as extremist by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution.
