Horses in the Storm - Sardinia's Rocky Sanctuary

Pferde im Sturm - Das wilde Herz Sardiniens

Hundreds of horses run wild on Sardinia's harsh, rocky Giara plateau.  Abandoned after 4,000 years providing the Mediterranean island's transport and power, they survive in the harshest conditions. Almost from birth the foals gallop fearlessly across the treacherously rocky terrain. Spring rainfall creates a network of small lakes that support water-snakes, amphibians, leeches,  ancient crustaceans - and the water-plants that are the horses' favourite diet. But the burning summer turns the lakes to dust and food all but disappears, triggering territorial conflict, and testing equine intelligence: where can grass be found? Nero, the Old King and Dirty Boy are the charismatic characters vying with each other and with their neighbours for dominance, territory and mating rights in this  moving, poetic and stunningly photographed story.
