Gerold Plassek is anything but a do gooder. A journalist with a regional newspaper in St. Pölten and a confirmed cynic, he never does more than the minimum necessary. He spends his sizeable amounts of free time getting drunk with like minded friends at his favourite pub - until two unexpected and initially unwelcome events put an end to Gerold's lethargy and perpetual misery. First, he becomes responsible overnight for Manuel, the 14 year old son of an old friend while the friend is overseas working for Doctors without Borders. Secondly, and even more seriously, an anonymous well-wisher donates large sums of money to precisely the charitable organisation that Gerold's newspaper articles are looking into. And his acquaintanceship with Manuel's quick witted teacher Rebecca calls into question all the arrogant indifference he has cultivated over the years.
