Family law judge Sabine has kept away from her hometown and its dark memories since her mother's death - until her former love Leonard asks her to return for their high school reunion. The gathering is already in full swing when Sabine arrives and her friend Mia greets her with a heartfelt welcome. The former schoolmates update each other on the latest news, exchange memories, laugh, drink. Sabine quite unexpectedly finds herself enjoying the party, except for one drop of bitterness: Leonard isn't there. Suddenly, the mayor, Ferdinand, receives a phone call. Leonard's daughter has disappeared without a trace. Sabine, accompanied by Mia and Ferdinand, drives to Leonard's house where she faces him for the first time after all these years: Leonard and his wife, both wracked by immeasurable despair. Sabine feels helpless and wants to return home, but Leonard persuades her to stay, if not for him, then at least to offer moral support for his wife. Sabine finally consents but has a terrible suspicion about Leonard's daughter; and a quick trip for a class reunion turns into an unexpectedly long stay in her old hometown, a journey into Sabine's past where she has to confront her worst nightmare.
