High Life at Low Temperatures

Lungau - Wildnis im Herzen der Tauern

The summits and sheer mountain ridges of Austria's'Little Siberia' funnel the freezing air from snow-coveredpeaks into a gigantic hollow - a high-level plateauat 1,000 metres from which it cannot escape:Lungau is Austria's coldest region. Creeks andstreams start higher here, and create bogs, moorsand countless alpine lakes.Summer is short but lively, as eagles rear their preciousyoung and ermines eat their fill before thesparse winter returns, while black alpine salamandersgive birth to live miniature versions of themselvesbeneath the tree-line.
