Venice and the Ghetto

Venedig und das Ghetto

One of the most far-reaching inventions of the modern age, the Ghetto, was founded in Venice in a small isolated area of the city that had once been the site of a foundry. The birth of the Ghetto represents in many respects a turning point in the history of the Jewish people. The idea of the ghetto comprised three key features: The compulsion for the Jews to settle there. The strict separation of Jews and non-Jews. The fact of being fastened in by walls and locked gates.
